Make like a dolphin. Or a pea. Just don't fence me in!
Hopefully by now you will have seen some sample floorplans, of how we hope the libraries will look in our RFID-enabled future. One major change to not just the physical side of things but also our workflow, is that we will not be having large circulation desks, but small staff "pods". We will be lacking some serious storage space at the pods.... so some things will have to go!
This is a great time to really think deeply about what hard copy items we actually use at the desk, and what can be accessed electronically.
One recent example has been the removal of the pink "recent library emails" folder, and relying instead on the 'Must Read' folder of the Civiclib email account.

Of course we have the intranet ('Central'), which has links off to websites, databases, documents on the h drive and dataworks, and more! I've noticed that not many of you seem to use the intranet though... so am wondering what the barriers are to you using it more/at all! I'm really keen for an efficient use of everyone's time, which I believe the intranet can greatly assist with. But it needs to suit your needs. So hit me up with your honest appraisals - what works, what doesn't, what would make you use it! For me, I find the lack of central responsibility for the front page of the intranet really frustrating. I mean, in whose world does the Summer 2013 edition of Unley Life count as "Latest news"?? Unfortunately that is out of my control, but it does give the intranet a bad image of being outdated. Which I can assure you, the Library pages are not!

What if we make the Library link our home page instead of the Council's intranet? At least the information there is what we usually access plus it's up to date.
ReplyDeleteHi Louise, As we move towards pod-based work I would love to have a searchable document or website type thing for all our tasks, procedures, and the misc infomation we commonly use or get asked about on desk. I think this would be an excellent back up of knowledge for everyone, especially for casuals and staff that move around a lot. It's so hard to remember everything, and sometimes you just want to check up on whether what you think is the right information is actually the right information. At the moment we are really good at working together and asking staff around us, but having a library super brain would be awesome. If it could be something we could all add to and update that would be really cool too, so the Intranet might not be the best option. It could be something as simple as a word document maybe? An A-Z of library things to know? - Amelia
ReplyDeleteI agree, I think the lack of updated information - and irrelevant ways of searching what is there (eg having to actually know the name of the person you are looking for in the staff directory!) puts a big shadow over the intranet. But the library stuff is at least in our control so if we can work on improving that even more, then I would be really keen to use it more.
